I paddled my kayak to Chicken Key this morning, expecting to see more fish than birds. The trip was birdier than I expected, with the highlight being a calling Mangrove Cuckoo at the mouth of the power plant canal that crosses 152nd St., just NE of the Deering Estate. This site is reachable by foot as well as by kayak: A short publicly-accessible trail parallels the canal. Out on the water, about a zillion Cattle Egrets in small groups incessantly flew back and forth overhead; I presume a rookery is nearby.

I stopped at the 173rd St./Old Cutler Rd. canoe launch site just south of Deering afterward, and was greeted almost immediately by a *second* Mangrove Cuckoo, an adult in a tree on the other side of the canal. It obligingly flew to my side and perched within 20 feet of me, giving great looks at all field marks, before disappearing into the mangroves. Wow!--and this with 3 or 4 additional people nearby.

Good birding, Susan
