In response to Alex--I didn't hear my first cuckoo this morning until around 8:30 AM. The call, given only once, was loud--so the bird was close, in a mangrove area without apparent human access (west of the canal mouth and of the trail). I did consider the possibility of tapes at the time--and your post brings home the necessity of doing so!

For those interested in the two cuckoo sites in my post (152nd St. and 173rd St.), excellent maps are available on the website of the local sea kayaking group, yakhalesnavy.homestead.com.
