Today, I visited Tigertail Beach in Collier County; I also stopped at several locations along Tamiami Trail. Several Limpkins were calling at dawn around the Shark Valley entrance; one was seen along the tram road before a rain shower chased me back to my car. The rain continued intermittently until I reached Big Cypress Bend Boardwalk in Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park. Here, I observed a young Bald Eagle as it briefly poked its head out of the nest. Other species seen here included Pileated Woodpecker, Tufted Titmouse and Northern Waterthrush. At Eagle Lakes Park, I found a Swamp Sparrow and at least eight Bronzed Cowbirds.
I found all the usual wintering plovers at Tigertail (Black-bellied, Wilson's Semipalmated, Piping and Snowy), but shorebird diversity was otherwise low. Lots of Dunlin and Western Sandpipers, a few Sanderling and Ruddy Turnstones, but no oystercatchers, godwits, dowitchers, knots . . . I didn't even see a Willet! And it sure was cold out there!
