Very active from 3-5 PM:
Kestrel 1-2
Merlin 1
Sharp-shinned Hawk, I think
Coopers Hawk
Red-shouldered Hawk 2-3
Broad-winged Hawk (perched on the big snag opposite the visitor center; then flew)
the usual waders, plus several wood storks and 2 spoonbills
American Bittern (posed outside of cover for a long time, then melted away)
Wilson's Snipe
etc.
Mystery bird of the day: In the dense cover on the north side--that stuff growing out of the water least bitterns like--where it pretty much encloses the boardwalk, something was causing individual stalks to move out of synch with the wind. We (wife Sandy and I) looked for a long time, and finally got bare glimpses of an apparent bird climbing around on the stalks. I just saw the back end, which was very dark, with a few very thin gold or yellow lines, uneven but running lengthwise on the body. Sandy also thinks it was charcoal in color, and may have had a black bill. We are entirely clueless about what this might have been, and any suggestions will be appreciated.
