I did consider that, but the stripes I saw were thinner than in the YR pictures in my field guides; I am still looking for a picture of a young one, though, maybe they are different. Also, I did not see the faint white lines that are perpendicular to the yellow ones on an adult YR (though this could have been due to the darkness).
The size was about right; one big thing against the YR possibility is that the bird was clambering around on a plant stalk above water, very deliberately, and I'm sure that this would be very, very out-of-character behavior for a YR.
