I realize I'm going slightly off-topic, please excuse that. This question is really bugging me! No pun intended. I've lived in Miami for 14+ years and never seen fireflies/lightning bugs. Do we have them?
There is an ongoing national study called Firefly Watch - I'll provide the link below if anyone wants to check out the data. The study is hoping to determine if fireflies are on the decline. There are several distribution maps where you can see the locations where they are commonly observed. South Florida isn't among those places - indeed nothing south of Jacksonville on the eastern coast is, and only to Tampa on the western coast. But in an earlier study (1966) fireflies *were* present in south Florida. Have they gone locally extinct here, or am I just missing them? Thank you.
