An immature Black-Crowned Night Heron was observed sitting in a Wild Tamarind tree at Castellow Hammock on Wednesday, December 3 (a first for the park). The bird was perched on the same branch all day long. On Thursday, December 4 it was seen again on a different Wild Tamarind tree early in the morning and was observed by Roger Hammer picking Liguus and Orthalicus tree snails off of the tree, crushing the shells with its beak, and eating them! I swear I haven't been smoking crack! It flew off at about 10 a.m. and wasn't seen again the rest of the day. I'll look again tomorrow.
