On May 8, the day of the North American Migration Count, I found a Northern Parula that was singing in a mahogany in the median of the Royal Palm Hammock parking area. Since Northern Parula is not known to breed in Everglades National Park or in Miami-Dade County (though they breed as close as Big Cypress National Preserve in Collier and possibly northern Monroe County), I assumed it was simply a late migrant. If a singing parula is still present this late in May, one has to suspect that nesting has occurred. It may be worth checking the Spanish moss in those mahogany trees.
