For the last two weeks we have been listening to Mockingbirds mimicking Gray Kingbirds but yesterday while walking around campus we found a single Gray Kingbird doing a great job at what they do best; flycatching!
We had an interesting sighting from last week in the preserve, as we were rounding a corner in the trail a bird flushed in front us and gave us long fleeing looks at it. With the looks we got we feel as the bird may very well be the same Western Tanager we found in there earlier this year. As the bird flew away we both noted that the bird was vibrant yellow, had a dark back, tail and wings as well as a yellow nape. We also noted the birds rapid wing beats as it flew away. We looked and looked and listened but no dice. We feel strongly that this was indeed the Western Tanager from earlier this year.
Also at the preserve was a solitary Indigo Bunting mixed in with all the PABU. Warblers seen included B & W, Palm, Yellow-rumped, Worm-eating, Parula, Prairie and Common Yellowthroat we heard an Ovenbird but it would not show itself. We also flushed a Cooper's Hawk that was carrying a meal, pretty cool. Spring Migration is here, be sure to pass by badbirdz2 for up to date radar animations of birds migrating.
Nature is Awesome
