We decided not bird the preserve today and check out another area on campus that we bird at from time to time. Good thing we did; we were able to add a new species for our FIU list, Yellow-crowned Heron! Two of them to be exact, they may be nesting in the island! The birds are exhibiting their awesome breeding plumage, their legs were red in color and their crowns were glowing a beautiful warm golden yellow in the sun. We will keep tabs on these guys and hopefully see some nesting activity.
We also had some warblers moving around the hammock including Palm, Prairie, Parula, Yellow-rumped, B&W, Common Yellowthroat and a Waterthrush spp. Hanging out with the warblers was a lonely Red-eyed Vireo as well.

Nature is Awesome
