Today, I birded the area on SW 168th St. (Richmond Drive) Dan had birded last week. These are designated SFWMD Vacant Lands west of the 357 canal and consist of impoundments surrounded by levees. The area is under succession with small pools here and there. From 6:40 to 8:40 AM, the following birds of interest were seen/heard:

Savannah Sparrow (6)
Grasshopper Sparrow (4)
White-crowned Sparrow (2 - one adult and one first winter)
Clay-colored Sparrow (3 - all appeared to be adults)
Eastern Towhee (1 heard)
Painted Bunting (1 or 2 females)
House Wren (1)
Eastern Phoebe (2 or 3)
Loggerhead Shrike (2)
Northern Cardinal (1)
Palm Warbler (many)
Common Yellowthroat (many)

Dan, I saw what I strongly believe to be 3 Clay-colored Sparrows in the same general area where you saw 3 Chipping Sparrows the week before.

All 3 of the birds I saw had conspicuous gray napes that contrasted against the lighter color of their unmarked flanks and bellies. They each had brown cheeks outlined by dark postocular stripes and a visible lateral throat stripe. Just wondering how good a view you got of yours.

I'll probably check this area again soon - I need Chipping Sparrow for the year. Toe and Angel and Mariel may check this place out tomorrow. Thanks for your posting last week.

Bird on,
RJ
