They are definitely around in decent numbers -- Kendale Lakes Park near my home in West Kendall regularly hosts around 10-15 individuals when the orchid trees are in full bloom.
As the trees finish flowering, most of these birds move on to new feeding grounds later in winter.
There are usually a couple birds in every well vegetated suburban park in Miami-Dade during the late fall and winter season.
