In the spirit of promoting native plants:
In my old yard my neighbor had a Hong Kong orchid tree. I, of course, had a Firebush, Bahama Strongback, and two Live Oaks. Yes, the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds definitely used and defended the Hong Kong Orchid regularly but I found that not only did they feed from the Firebush and Strongback but spent much time in the oak perched and feeding. I think that they were resting, hawking insects and feeding from the blooms (which I believe would be March & April). The hummingbirds regularly stayed into April.
Having a Hong Kong orchid tree is no doubt a hummingbird magnet but creating the habitat is also key and if you add these plants you will the hummingbirds and much more.
The TAS Native Plant and Book Sale will be on February 27 & 28. Come and get your habitat started.
How is that for a plug?
Joe
