While scouting for the Long Pine Key CBC, Carlos Sanchez and I found a La Sagra's Flycatcher. The bird has classic La Sagra's field marks: small Myiarchus, cream colored underparts with slight yellow wash on lower belly, subtle rufous in the tail, light-edged tertials, wing bars, large brownish head and long bill that seems out of proportion with size of bird. It was calling when we first arrived at 8:50 AM and gave 10-12 clear, loud whistle-like "wheet" calls.
The location is along the graded road leading to Hidden Lake, ~ 30 yards north of Gate 13. After entering ENP, turn toward Royal Palm, then take turn to Beard Center. After .5 miles you will be at the eastern terminus of Research Road. At the stop sign, continue straight ~ .1 or .2 miles.
The bird flew back and forth across the road, each time staying within easy viewing. We had excellent looks in good light. Its support group is a mixed bag: Black-throated Green Warbler, Blue-headed and White-eyed Vireos, Ruby-crowned Kinglet and a Great Crested Flycatcher, which offers great comparison.
Please let me know if you see and photograph it within the next 3 days. My through-the-bins little camera system didn't do the trick, as the bird prefers to perch mid-level.
