Carlos and I were discussing the race of the Short-eared Owls in Southeastern Florida. Obviously, most of the sightings are in the winter, when we are in the Everglades or the surrounding areas looking for owls or birds in similar habitat.
Has anyone been able to confirm that these are indeed the Northern nominate race as opposed to the Caribbean subspecies. Given the time of year of the appearances, the favor goes to the Northern race, but given the frequency of the findings for the past two winters, I'm curious.
Just a thought, perhaps prompted by the successful breeding of Least Grebes and Western Spindalis in 2008 and 2009.
