Sunday I got stuck putting up masses of Christmas lights for a friend of a friend in Pinecrest. It ended up being a suburban bird bonanza! While outside (all afternoon) I talleyed over 30 species without leaving my task! Honestly I was shocked at the birdlife- birds were numerous all day- and before evening it was one (or several)after another. The most interesting was the bulbul. They didn't show up until about 4pm. It didn't take long before they were everywhere. At one point there were 18 in view at one time, with others around. Other goodies were hummingbirds(all day) at one point while looking at the bulbul one was in clear view, then got attacked by anouther. Prairie, black and white and redstart were the most interesting of the recognized warblers. Hill mynas came by once. A coopers(?)hawk came by to terrorize the community. Parrots (conures and canary-winged types) were around. The area was 70th ave south of 124th st. There is a canal that crosses 124th, the house I believe is more near 129th st. One question. I heard the canary winged type parakeet a few times yesterday. At my house (Bryan park, Miami) the call seemed to sound different than the others in Pinecrest. Is it at all reliable to tell the difference between the two types by voice alone? The Pinecrest ones sounded less variable, more on the same pitch than the ones in my neighborhood. Mine definately have more variable (up and down)intonation in thier calls.
