Just walk Crandon Beach at low tide (4:00pm), where we (some of naturalists staff), observed a flock of (25) Common Terns on the flats, also confirm the Black terns (2) and several Sandwich terns. There were also (12) Piping plovers on the flats, mixed with 25-30 Semi-palmated plovers and a plus Black-bellied plover still in its summer plumage. Other birds present were Black skimmers, Royal terns, Laughing gulls, Double-crested cormorants, and Sanderlings. The Crandon Rookery located southwest of the marina, has roosting Frigatebirds and Brown Pelicans. Black-crowned Night Herons are a regular at the charter fishing docks. The best place to bird at low tide is the beach area east of Parking Lot # 3 & 4, park gate opens at 8:00am and closes at sunset. If you have any questions, the naturalists staff can be reached in the Crandon Park Administration Office at Lot # 3. We welcome your observations to add to our records.
