Thanks for the great find. I arrived early this morning (~6:40) and parked across from the private residence. Trey arrived a little later and parked behind me and proceeded to check something on his engine. He had a squeaky belt so it was hard to listen for the birds. As soon as he turned his car off, he says "I think I heard it." I thought I heard the same call from behind the private residence. As I start walking towards Trey's car, we start hearing a song that I didn't recognize coming from a pine directly above Trey's car, across from the residence. From Trey's car, we looked up and there in the pine were both the male and female Western Spindalis. What's more, the male was singing!
Now, here we have a pair of Western Spindalis in summer, and the male is singing. Possible nesting in Florida? Sounds pretty plausible, and exciting.
Trey took some photos before the birds flew towards the campground, then he took some more after I left. Congrats to the couple that made this awesome find!
