Toe and I went to look for the Western Spindalis early this morning reported by H. Trudell and her husband yesterday at Long Pine Key in Everglades national park. I arrived at about 7am; 30 minutes after Toe. My van had a pulley squeaking and I opened my hood to take a look. I then hear the "Zeeet " call coming from near by. Then I heard a Squeak Squeak -- Squeak Squeak call coming from overhead. I turned off the van and called Toe and sure enough it was the Male Western Spindalis singing and then 30 seconds later what looked to us like a Female Western Spendalis landed in the same pine. I took a couple of shots of the Male and a couple of the (female?). The lighting was poor so I waited a while and they showed themselves again. Here are a few of the photos ...
The Western Spindalis - both birds were seen between the private residence and the camping loop. After looking at the photos the bird I thought was a female looks odd to me. What do you guys think?
