Green Cay Screech Owls?

I had not been out to Green Cay in Boynton Beach, Palm Beach County for about a week until this past Sunday afternoon, April 26. While there were still lots of babies around (Moorhens, Limpkins, Mottled Ducks, Killdeer) and others still nesting (more Moorhens, Black-necked Stilts, Purple Gallinules, Red-winged Blackbirds), I was dismayed to find that the owl box that the Eastern Screech Owls occupied in the back of the wetlands had the front completely torn off with nothing remaining of the family or the nest.

The gray female had been in the nest for quite a while and the red male had perched in the slash pine near the boardwalk until recently when he moved somewhere else. I have photos of them both and was anticipating the day when the babies poked their heads out the hole.

I am assuming that the bobcats were responsible but would be interested to know if anyone knows the cause for sure.

I guess that will never happen this year. :(

Rick
