Green Cay, Wakodahatchee Friday April 10th
Why is the Least Tern listed as endangered on the Nat l Geographic field guides? If you were entertained by the dive bombing tactics of this aerial energizer bunny today at GC or W, you might have suggested there was some possible error. The small tern size, the white forehead, the deeply forked tail, the black tipped yellow bill, and the all white beneath except for the black outermost 2 or so primaries. That first turn into the first full view of Wakodahatchee (W) reminded me of watching Tora Tora Tora only it was over 30-40 Least Tern performing the hovering and diving tactics to catch fingerlings.
Afterwards at Green Cay (GC), another 40-50 Least Tern provided similar entertainment to the photographers as they swept, hovered, and dived til poor lighting made it difficult to take any pictures.
