After getting a pre-dawn Barn Owl near Eco Pond and a heard Barred Owl during the Coot Bay CBC on Saturday, I decided on my way home to stop by Research Road. After scoring with a pair of White-tailed Kites near the missile base, a Barred Owl appeared on the roof of one of the missile base buildings as the sun set.

Coming back in the dark, as I went around the first curve my cell phone rang; it had slid to the floor and I had to stop and pick it up. I remained stopped as I talked to my wife--until I yelled "Gotta Go!" and dropped the phone as a Short-eared Owl crossed the road and glided through my headlight beams not 25 feet away! Had my wife not called, I'd have passed by the spot already and would never have seen it cross behind me!

Just past the second curve, I picked up the eyeshine of a Whip-poor-will and was able to get within about 6 feet before it flew.

I ended the day with an Eastern Screech Owl near the Boy Scout camp.
