Hunting season in SE Florida

I posted a few weeks ago about 4 areas south of Okeechobee which had a 4 month continuous hunting season. I wrote a letter to FWC and received this response. I consider this totally unacceptable, that non-hunters can not have a few weeks outside of mosquito season to visit these areas.

Unrelated, they also sent me a link to a new site they are creating which is the equivalent of the four Florida Birding Trail pamphlets. This will be nice when finished.

Dear Mr. Friedel,

I want to thank you for your email of November 30 to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The four areas you mentioned in your email of November 30 provide excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. Dinner Island in particular can be quite a rewarding spot for birding.

You are welcome to visit any of these areas during hunting season. While small game hunting is allowed November through March, this is not a busy season and these management areas are quite large. Multiple uses of these areas has proven to be quite safe and many recreational activities are encouraged. The levee roads on Holeyland and Rotenberger provide expansive views of the Everglades marsh. Wildlife viewing along the roads of Spirit of the Wild and Dinner Island is also easy and fun. Most hunting activity will be in the more backcountry parts of these areas. If you prefer to get out and walk cross-country, you can wear a hunter orange cap or vest for extra visibility.

Florida s wildlife management areas sustain our fish and wildlife resources and provide opportunities where we can share the enjoyment of these expansive landscapes. We hope you will enjoy visiting.
