Launch from the ramp at the west side of the marina and just turn left outside the harbor entrance. One of the rental kayaks may track better in the wind and chop than your inflatable. Or, your wife may be more inclined to accompany you on the water if you rent a canoe at the marina. Be sure to go out on a rising tide, as you can run out of water out there, and there is no way you can walk back in the muck.
Generally, there are no alligators to be concerned about in the salt water, but there are American Crocodiles out there. Just look across from the canal at the marina gas pumps and you should see one or two.
