I got up to the Belle Glade area today; most of the usual birds were found along with a few more interesting ones. There were six Upland Sandpipers near the south end of the King Ranch Sod Fields east of US 27 this morning. The best flooded field I looked at was along CR 827A south of Belle Glade where along with the usual species a Wilson s Phalarope and American Avocet were seen. Other interesting species seen today included Roseate Spoonbill, Stilt Sandpipers, Gull-billed Terns, Black Terns, Barn Owls, Grey Kingbird, Cliff Swallows, Bank Swallows, and Yellow Warblers.

A late afternoon stop at the King Ranch Sod Fields produced a possible Coyote sighting; two Canids that were too large and long legged for Foxes with full dark tails carried low, a very skinny appearance with dark pointed ears and a pointed snout. I ve seen Coyotes in North Florida and these looked just like them. This isn t the farthest south that I ve seen possible Coyotes, last June I saw an animal fitting the same description in Everglades National Park on the main park road at the turn off to Royal Palm Hammock. Coyotes are difficult to identify with certainty without a specimen but it would be interesting to hear of other possible sighting as well as what the Fish and Wildlife Service has to say.
