This past Sunday, Troy, Jeanette, and I got our bird and fish fix (say that 5 times real fast) while paddling and snorkeling around Indian Key State Historic Site. We had more species of tropical fish than birds for the day with the following rounding out our list: Atlantic Spadefish, Blue Damselfish, Gray Angel (that was bigger than the size of Troy's head), French Angel, Silver Porgy, enormous Rainbow Parrotfish, Scrawled Filefish, Porkfish, Great Baracuda, Yellow-tail and Mangrove Snapper, Scrawled Cowfish, Ocean Surgeon, Sergeant Major, French Grunt, Cherubfish, Blue Tang (yellow-colored juvenile), Beaugregory (damselfish), Yellowfin Mojarra, Spanish Hogfish, Needlefish, Blenny, Spotted Eagle Ray, and huge schools of some type of minnow-like fish very difficult for us to identify.....But we still love our birds.....the Brown Pelican, Magnificent Frigatebird, Red-winged Blackbird, White Ibis, Little Blue Heron, Great Egret, Double-crested Cormorant, Turkey Vulture, and a pair of peeps too far away to accurately identify without the binocular. Our best guess as they flew away from the canoe would be Spotted Sandpiper (but don't quote me on that!) I was surprised to see few number of power boaters and jetskiers out on the water. Perhaps rising fuel costs are taking a really big bite out of some people's discretionary budgets. (So fellow Sailors and Paddlers get thee out on the water while it's clear and safe for the time being!) We ended our day at Whale Harbor Dock and Marina restaurant with yummy blackened Mahi-Mahi and Wahoo sandwiches. I washed mine down with a draught of Key West Amber Ale, and Troy digested his with a pint of Guiness. Wa Hooooooooooooooo!
