Kathy's excellent sighting yesterday brought the Virginia Key Ecosystem Restored Area (VKERA) bird list to 94 since 3 March 2008. Bruce Anderson, who keeps tabs on Smooth-billed Anis in FL, thinks that some birds annually make it to South Florida from the Bahamas or Caribbean. We usually get 1-2 anis in Cape Florida but they don't stay more than 2 days. Kathy's bird was harassed by grackles and I know that Angel and Mariel couldn't relocate it late yesterday.
Please see the following post for more background and directions:

The saltwater channel is now open so the boardwalk area should become slightly brackish. Whereas 6 weeks ago the new boardwalk area seemed to be sterile, shorebirds now feed voraciously on the flats created by evaporation of rain/ground water.
One thousand (!) Americorps volunteers are planting native vegetation today in the restored areas. The historic children's train should be running in 4-5 weeks and funds are being solicited to buy a carousel similar to the one used in the park years ago.
Black-necked Stilts love the new area and there are at least 2 active nests.
