I think you were on the right track with the superb starling. It sounds like a bird in the genus Lamprotornis. Check out greater blue-eared glossy-starling (L. chalybaeus) in particular, but there are a number of Lamprotornis species that generally match your description. Did you get a photograph of the bird?
