Hi Brennan - a common yellowthroat would be more likely. However, it sure acts different than the ones I've seen, both in the Everglades and in Maine. It would have helped if there had been a male with it!

I used the National Wildlife Federation bird guide and thought it looked like the first fall nominate (p 362) orange-crowned. It's not as slender as the yellowthroat. Here are the other considerations: NWF says common yellowthroat is "more conspicuous than most ground-dwelling warblers... and often forages in the open." This one was quite shy and didn't like me watching it.

OC also "tends to forage lower and more deliberately" than Tennessee and Yellow. It was behavior more than anything that caused me to question whether it was a female common yellowthroat.

I'll look for it again next time I go and see if anything changes about its behavior or looks. Thanks for the input. You're probably right.
