Went back out to Bunche Beach today in search of the elusive (to me) Long Billed Curlew.
At first look, the beach was much less birdy than the last time we were there. Boy, were we wrong!
The tide was out and there were tons of pelicans pounding the fish in the channel on the Ft Myers beach bridge end.
We decided to head back over to the Sanibel end where we had spotted the Marbled Godwits last time.
Soon we noticed four red breasted Mergansers in the waves and stopped to have a closer look.
One was the grebe pictured above.White neck, white tip to the bill-Horned Grebe? I stayed and took some pictures of it which was not too easy with the wind, haze, glare and waves .
There were a million black Skimmers (that flushed at one point and formed a long line that seemed to stretch the length of Fort Myers beach in the background).
Eagle Eye found a solitary bird that she thought was a marbled Godwit out past the DEEP channel. I thought it was our nemesis Curlew. Fortunately it took pity on us and flew towards us to provide a definite ID.
Heading back towards the car we had a LOW flyover of 17 Frigatebirds.
We walked over towards where Trey had seen the Curlew to get a better look at the Pelicans and maybe resight the Grebe.
Never found the Grebe but we did come across more than forty Redbreasted Mergansers in the waves. A pair of kayakers paddled right next to them and they didn't even move. Pretty cool.
