OK, I said it: Great Black Hawk. I saw it this afternoon on the road to Virginia Beach just past the first curve to the left. It was having a brawl with a Red-shouldered. The Red-shouldered took off, but the Black Hawk perched on a snag right in front of me and I got crippling looks from my car. It flew once to a nearby snag and I got clear looks at the bird in flight, especially the white band on the tail. According to my limited insight into this species, one difference between Great Black Hawk and Common Black Hawk is that the white on the Great is on the rump, while the Common has it farther down on the tail. If this is true, then this bird is definitely a Great Black Hawk.

Now, is determining the true identity of this bird important? Of course not! It's just another non-countable, excotic, more-than-likely-escapee rat-with-wings like all the others we are infested with in South Florida. Instead of celebrating a life bird, and one more tick on my year list, I just pretend saw nothing! Where's my gun!!!!!!!!!!!
