"an adult male exposing himself while committing an inappropriate sexual act in front of people"
I am assuming that you were referring to a sighting(confirmed no doubt with hi res binocular views) of an adult male homo sapiens, as opposed to a coopers hawk or say a vireo.(Does an open trenchcoat qualify as a fieldmark?)And of course, your description raises the question of whether the sex act was somehow inappropriate by itself, or was inappropriate because it was "in front of people".....
But more seriously, logically, I don't see how large numbers of birders individually will affect the situation for it would seem that the more birders an exhibitionist has to "shock and awe" the happier he'd be. Large groups of birders together might be a deterrent, but perhaps anyone birding in Barnes--or any other secluded area or park, ought to have a cellphone handy with 911 on speed dial. This episode is an unwelcome reminder that the environment we live in is frequently hostile to our own species. We sometimes forget that. Unescorted women on foot, and anyone walking alone in parks or other secluded areas, carrying expensive or expensive looking gear(binoculars, cameras, scopes etc)should be particularly vigilant for more than just exhibitionists..And how often do we forget to lock our cars, or lock them and leave our gear in view?
Thanks for the heads up, as it were, Angel and Mariel
