ATTENTION ALL BIRDERS, WE NEED TO TAKE OUR PARK BACK!
This morning as we were observing the Blue-headed Vireos in between the tropical hardwood hammock (Homeless Hammock) and the pool area we were surprised to hear a car driving up the pathway through the hammock. We glanced back and noticed it was MDPD. The officer pulled up and greeted us. As it was the second officer seen in the park within an hour we asked him if there was something going on in the park that we should know about.
He responded that yesterday an incident occurred in the park near the Nature Center area with an adult male exposing himself while committing an inappropriate sexual act in front of people. We had heard from a friend of ours that this was a problem in the past at Barnes. The officer proceed to tell us to keep our eyes and ears open and report any unusual behavior. The indecent individual was arrested yesterday and they will continue to patrol the park to discourage this from continuing to occur.
Our friend Robin told us that when this was a problem in the past the birders communicated to bird the park as much as possible making noise and making their presence known. The presence of more people regularly in the park eventually discouraged this behavior from continuing to occur.
We are asking all birders to frequent the park as much as possible and take are beautiful Barnes park back! We need to unite to keep the park free of these non-law abiding citizens!
