The hawk counters at the Keys Hawk Watch at Curry Hammock SP on Grassy Key (Monroe County) got good looks today (FRI) at a bird they identified as a BLACK KITE at 2:15PM. If confirmed/accepted this will be a first North American record. There is a record of a vagrant from Iceland, so westward movement is not unprecedented. They got photos that they will try to post tonight. One of the counters is from Holland and is very familiar with the species and has extensive hawk counting experience both in the US and Europe. The bird passed by the Hawk Watch heading down the keys. If I were going to chase it I'd look first thing tomorrow morning at Boot Key in case it roosts there tonight. Hawks often roost at Boot Key rather than make the long crossing (7 mile bridge) in the afternoon.

Good Luck if you go.
