During the summer of 2005 we were driving up Turner River Road near HP Williams RS Park and while looking for birds we encountered a black racer that was trapped in a beer can, it looked as if the snake had slithered into the can and then got stuck with the pull tab on the way out. We stopped the car and started coming up with a plan to free the helpless reptile, we tried different ideas and were unsucesfull in getting the snake out. I remembered that I had my fish hook tongs that are about 10-12 inches long in the trunk, with the tongs we were able to grab a piece of the opening of the can and pull back to make the hole bigger. We tried to free the the snake again but it was still stuck, I tried opening the hole larger again and it finally worked we were able to coax the snake to go in a little more to free it's scales that had been hung up on the tab then the snake pulled it's head out and just sat there on the dirt road and looked at us with a look that I have never seen before coming from a snake. It had a look that said THANK YOU! that was a close one...
Took some pics. to remember the moment and to identify the snake when we got home, later we identified it as a Black Racer.
Poor snakes don't only have to worry about us driving over them but also stupid things like a can that should have never been on the floor.
We had always been interested in snakes but that moment sparked an interest that will never go away.
