What a touching story! I grew up in rural Virginia and black snakes were considered a great asset. They kept the rodent populations under control and I believe that I have read that they will actually eat copperheads, so they keep other snake populations under control as well.
Ah, nature.
too bad someone didn't put that can in the recycling bin....
