Recent reorganization of our home natural history displays, occasioned by our move a year ago, turned up the nest in the accompanying photo. It was packed away when we moved, and only recently saw the light of day again. We lived next to the Matheson nursery, and my wife Emily found the nest, with eggs inside, on the ground after one of the many storms a few years ago. The nest is approximately 4 1/2 inches wide by 3 1/2 inches high, and appears to be almost perfectly round, is constructed primarily of palm remnants and australiam pine needles. Approximately 20 white oval eggs are in the nest, many of them unhatched; each about 3/8ths of an inch long.
What bird is responsible for this delicate construction? And are all those eggs from the same brood?
