The Glaucous Gull that was reported by Juan Villamil and Kevin Sarsfield on Sunday was seen this morning at 11:50 a.m. I ran into David Cutler in the SE corner of the parking lot of a 3-story office building just east of Powerline on Sample Rd. next to a Hertz Rental. Look behind the large rock pile. Geat & Lesser Black-backed, Herring, Ring-billed and Laughing Gulls were there but not the Glaucous. We began checking all of the rockpits adjacent to the Pompano Beach Landfill until we spotted a raft of 1500 gulls on a lake on the west side of Powerline Rd. a little north of the landfill entrance. On the south side of the lake is Supermix Concrete and on the north side are apartments. Look for a place to park on Powerline and scope the gulls. Back-lighting would be helpful. The Glaucous sticks out like a sore thumb. It is first year bird and is almost lily white. Five Lesser-Black-backed Gulls were in the raft. Bruce Purdy called me at 1:15 p.m. and also saw the gull after receiving our directions. Check back at the office building site if you can't find it at this lake. The Tropical Audubon Society trip to Flamingo ESL will probably look for it Saturday, February 17.
Life is good.
