The last time I launched from the 173rd St. public access, I headed toward Chicken Key and had the pleasure of being joined by two foraging dolphins. This morning I turned south and explored the northern end of Biscayne NP.
Among the expected species, the avian highlight was seeing one of three vocalizing Mangrove Cuckoos. I enjoyed spotting half a dozen fish species, including a 1-foot Barracuda. More unusual was the sight of a foraging Horseshoe Crab. It was a good day for crustaceans, as I also saw a fairly large red land crab (species?) and the usual small brown mangrove crabs. I was not crabby after an hour on the water.
Good birding,
Susan
