Another great place is the headquarters of Biscayne NP at Convoy Point off SW 328th Street. It's very convenient too, there is a put-in ramp, they rent kayaks, nice bathrooms, air-conditioned visitor center where you can relax and watch a movie about the park once you are done, and a concession gift shop. When you enter you can go along the mangrove shoreline and also the boardwalk/jetty trail. There are terns and gulls and shorebirds on the jetty (it's a bird sanctuary so please give them distance) and there are always white ibis, magnificent frigatebirds, and brown pelicans flying overhead (and diving in the case of the brown pelicans), plus the usual dc cormorants. You can look for rarities like the recent "Commic." Another great place is Black Point county park & marina, where you also enter Biscayne NP. Black Point has a great kayak launch, and I like the restaurant. There are pelican and wading bird roosts there and I almost always see little nurse sharks.
