I enjoy the academic back-and-forth engendered by some of the reports on the Bird Board, but isn't there a way to do it without implying from the get-go that the original reporter was wrong? After all, he has seen the bird, the pundits have not. Frankly, if I were to put together a list of birds that would be hard to misidentify, even for a "lay" birder, a male Vermilion Flycatcher would be at the top of it.
What if the first report of the Loggerhead Kingbird had been written off a just a Gray Kingbird, and no one had gone down to confirm it?
Just because a previous record isn't in Stevenson and Anderson doesn't mean it can't happen.
It doesn't flatter the birding community when a report given in good faith is written off so cavalierly.
