I was birding with my son just after lunch at Bill Baggs State Park, there are still lots of warblers around. We had about 5-species of warbler, no Connecticuts were seen, we did get rained on which did not help. While we were enjoying very close looks at an American Redstart, I heard a woodpecker tapping. I thought we would have looked and seen a Red-bellied Woodpecker but low and behold it was a HAIRY WOODPECKER! I believe this is a first record for the park, it is very uncommon in most parts of Florida, what a surprise to see it in all places Bill Baggs State Park! I would expect to see one in the Pinelands of Everglades National Park if we were real lucky but not Bill Baggs!

Directions:

Drive to the farthest south parking lot, take the paved bike trail north. When you get to the end of the row of Cabbage Palms on your left, walk another 100 feet. Look for greenish flagging tape on your right side. The bird was feeding in a dead Gumbo Limbo behind this flag. It also feed in some dead branches of a Strangler Fig right of the dead Gumbo Limbo.

Cool!
