This afternoon, while leading a birding class in Everglades National Park, I found a deceased White-winged Crossbill at the Long Pine Key Picnic Area. The remains are now in the possession of Sonny Bass, ENP biologist.
It has been hypothesized that the bird may have been the victim of an impact with a motor vehicle (travelers from within the range of this species are known to visit Everglades National Park during winter.) The condition of the remains, found near a parking space in the picnic area, suggest an impact with a solid object. The carcass had not been discovered by ants, so it was likely not there long before I found it.
Hopefully, further study of the carcass will reveal other clues as to the origin of this bird.
