Although Spindalis is a terrible English name (Markhead is in use in the islands and would have been a decent choice), the AOU was right to remove Tanager from the name.

The reason is simple, the Spindalises are not Tanagers. The correct classification remains unclear, but they will ilkely either end up in a new family, or somewhere in the American sparrows or warblers. Where they will not be is with the tanagers!

On a separate note, I today got my 300th ABA countable species in Miami-Dade (not counting Yellow-chevroned Parakeet, which was recently removed from the ABA list).
