A big THANK YOU! to all energetic, enthusiastic and early-rising participants. No real surprises this year and until we got hammered by wind ~10 AM, we picked up excellent birds. All data sets are not in but it appears that our total species is 115. We have ~8 good "count week" birds, including Louisiana Waterthrush, Lesser Nighthawk, Red-tailed Hawk, Marsh Wren, Yellow-throated Vireo and Nashville Warbler.
Highlights: Magnificent Frigatebird (!), Swainson's Hawk, 3 owl species, Chuck-will's-widow, 5 woodpecker species, Least Flycatcher, 5,500+ Tree Swallows and Lincoln's Sparrow.
Lowlights: no Limpkin; no Eastern-Screech-Owl, despite early and late searches.
Dick Cunningham designed this count (7th year) to monitor pineland species and waders. He would be happy to know that other than Northern Bobwhite (secretive in winter), pineland species were present.
Again, many thanks to the party leaders who stepped up and efficiently/gracefully dealt with paperwork, financial accounting and participant logistics.
