Toe and I hit Royal Palm before sunrise this morning and heard a King Rail
from the board walk and saw a few warblers along the path. We also saw a Great
White Heron near the little bridge along the walk way. Along Gumbo Limbo Trail
we saw Prairie, Black and White, Ovenbird, Yellow-throated Vireo, White-eyed
Vireo and except for a few Blue-grey Gnatcatchers and Red-eyed Vireo the area
was very quiet.
We then drove up Research Rd. to look around and saw a Willow Flycatcher on the
curve just before the Stop sign near Hidden Lake. Toe spotted the flycatcher
from the van and we stopped to check it out. We heard two Willows calling and
finally located the bird again and I got one bad photo from a long distance. I
wasn't aware that my lens had fogged a bit from the humidity as well. Anyway a
great bird for a slow morning otherwise.
On the way back out of the park we located 25-30 Eastern Kingbirds at the
turn off to Research Rd.
Lucky Hammock was a bit more luck today than in recent trips. We ran in to
John Boyd and found a few interesting birds. We heard a Least Flycatcher, a
Summer Tanager, Yellow Warbler, Black and White, Yellow-throated, Prairie, Cape
May, Painted Bunting, Sandhill Cranes and one unidentified Flycatcher.
After a while we checked the Annex and found the Alder Flycatchers,
Bobolinks, Ovenbird, Prairie and not much else.
We checked Homestead Farm Fields on the way out, but only found one very
small puddle with a few shorebirds.
