Folks, this is more of an inquiry than a report. Where are we standing on the tropicbird situation? This is not your everyday bird and we all need closure on this matter. Alex, I believe Toe had contacted you about submitting documentation to the FORC for review. Are you going to go ahead with this, do you still believe it's a Red-billed Tropicbird? I do.
Trey, has anybody else contacted you about the Frontiers ID posting? Alvaro Jaramillo's reply was ver helpful, and so was Peter Pyle's. I'm just wondering why no one else has contributed in that forum. It may be do to their lack of experience with these birds or maybe because 'Junkin's Warbler' is just too hot a topic to get off of. I personally never received a reply from Brian Patteson, I believe Toe hasn't either. I'll keep trying to contact him.
If we all agree that this was a Red-billed Tropicbird, we can do one of two things: Since this is a review species for Florida, we would have to submit our case and hope for acceptance. Or, we don't submit anything, we all agree on one of the two species, and we all sleep better at night. If you happen to be a diehard lister, this last option may not do it for you For scientific and historical purposes (and bragging rights), an official acceptance of this sighting would be great, really great!
I have seen hundreds of photos already, I can't look at anymore. Personally, I strongly believe that the bird was a Red-billed Tropicbird! That's two of us down, four more to go.
Also, if anybody sees or talks to Toe, congratulate him, he became a proud daddy for the second time!
I also like to ask for everyone to keep Bob Kelley in their thoughts and pray for a speedy recovery.
Cheers and bird on,
RJ
