That statement of 2010 being the coldest December has been used in a misleasing way for 4 years now. The record December they keep mentioning is based on average temps for the entire month, not absolute temps on a daily basis. See the link below. You will see that the record low for 17 of the 31 days in December were set in the first half of the 20th century, and on no days in 2010 did we reach a record low for that date. In fact, the coldest day (night) of any December was the night of Dec 24/25, 1989 at 31 degrees, followed closely by 32 deg in 1934.

The warming trend I keep bringing to everyone's attention is based on my observation of a lack of strong cold fronts, and what cold fronts we do get are fewer and far between. The data supports this observation, since it's becoming increasingly rare to see a drop into the 40's in December, and most in winters, at all!
