The Buff-bellied Hummingbird was seen today before the rain started at Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden. It was was active and noisy and divided it's time between the Bahama Marsh-Bush (Pavonia bahamensis) across from the Gatehouse Museum which is marked with a yellow sign as the place to look for the the Buff-bellied and the Chinese-Hat plants to the north across from the Cactus and Succulent Garden.
There was an adult male Ruby-throated Hummingbird in the Chinese-Hat area along with a few immature males beginning to develop gorgets. The young birds were checked carefully to see if the Black-chinned Hummingbird that was reported a couple of weeks ago was among them. A lot of skirmishing and nervous tail pumping was going on among the young rubythroats but they all showed red in their emerging gorget feathers.
