On the early evening of March 31st 2014 north of B and C loops at the Flamingo Campground at Everglades National Park there were dozens of fireflies flying low over the coastal prairie flashing at five to six second intervals. No Black Rails which were my main reason for the vigil called but a Barn Owl gave an excellent show while hunting just after sunset. A little later the winter Milky Way emerged from the dusk and I had a fine time observing the numerous open clusters and nebulae among the late winter evening constellations and the much closer light of an occasional firefly wandering over the campground.
